Giuseppe Cirillo

Giuseppe Cirillo works in the fields of Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Technology and Macromolecular Chemistry at Department of Pharmacy, Health and Nutritional Sciences, University of Calabria (Italy).

He received the Master Degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology cum laude in 2005 and the PhD Degree in Methodologies for the Development of Molecules of Pharmaceutical Interest at in 2008 at the University of Calabria. The research interests involved the development of polymeric carriers for controlled/sustained drug delivery based on Molecularly Imprinted Polymers and Hydrogel from Natural Origin. The interest in nanomedicine, and in the application of carbon nanomaterials, started in 2008 during the visiting PhD position at when Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research (IFW) Dresden (Germany) in the Marie Curie Research Training Network CARBIO. The research activities in biomedicine was implemented during the post-doctoral fellowships at University of Calabria from 2009 to 2016 in cooperation with IFW Dresden where he was visiting researcher. During this period, further cooperation were established with the Children’s Cancer Institute (CCIA) and the Centre for Nano Medicine, University of New South Wales, in Sydney, Australia; the University Hospital Dresden, and the National Center for Radiation Research in Oncology Dresden, the Department of Biology, University of Pisa, the Institute of Nanoscience of Aragon (INA), Department of Condensed Matter Physics, University of Zaragoza. In this context, polymer therapeutics and multi-functional hybrid materials for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications were designed, synthesized and characterized in a multi-disciplinary context.

In 2011, he won the POR Calabria FSE 2007/2013 with a project titled “Synthesis and characterization of novel carbon-nanotubes – polymer composites for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications”

The research activity resulted in more than 115 publication, including research and review articles, book chapters and edited books. He was invited speaker at IFW Dresden, CCIA, and 2017 IORS Congress in Regenerative Medicine. He is editorial board member of Molecules (Publisher MDPI); Current Pharmaceutical Design (Published Bentham); Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity (Publisher Hindawi), and Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology (Publisher Frontiers Media). He achieved the National Qualification as Associate Professor in Drug technology, socioeconomics and regulation and in the Chemical basis of Technology Applications in 2012 and 2016. At Department of Pharmacy, Health and Nutritional Sciences, University of Calabria he carried our teaching activity and supporting teaching activity in Chemistry and Biochemistry of fermentations; Innovative Pharmaceutical Formulations; Technology of Health Products; Pharmaceutical Technology; Processes of Pharmaceutical Industry; Food Commodity Science.
