{"id":1068,"date":"2019-02-20T07:32:19","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T06:32:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vincent.org.rs\/en\/?page_id=1068"},"modified":"2019-02-20T07:32:20","modified_gmt":"2019-02-20T06:32:20","slug":"taking-magnetic-hyperthermia-and-magnetogenetics-to-the-next-level-key-aspects-to-address-from-a-basic-physics-point-of-view","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.vincent.org.rs\/en\/d_serantes_abstract\/","title":{"rendered":"Taking magnetic hyperthermia and magnetogenetics to the next level: key aspects to address from a basic-physics point of view"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vincent.org.rs\/en\/d_serantes\/\">David Serantes<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Instituto de Investigaci\u00f3ns Tecnol\u00f3xicas and Applied Physics Department, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Santiago de Compostela, Spain<\/em><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim of the talk is to highlight some key aspects\nthat, in my opinion and from the theoretical point of view, need to be\naddressed in order to achieve further biomedical success using the heat\nreleased by nanomagnets under AC fields: despite the promising application\nperspectives (hyperthermia cancer treatment; drug release; magnetogenetics;\netc.), the fact is that the success in reaching routine clinical practice is\nvery scarce. From the physics point of view, a main difficulty is the lack of\ntheoretical models able to describe the behaviour of MNPs in the viscous\nbiological environment, what results in the absence of accurate tools able to\nguide the experiments. The failure in the current models involves several key\nfactors, including procedural (complete impossibility to explain successful\nheating effects on cells when the global heating is negligible); interpretative\n(current heating mechanisms cannot account for accurate heat-triggering\nexperiments \u2013 other mechanisms at play?); and descriptive ones (available\nmodels are limited to short timescales, far from those of the experiments). The\ncomplex nature of the problem requires a multiphysics approach to go beyond the\nstate-of-of-the art and overcome the above limitations, able to; simultaneously\nembrace superparamagnetic and Brownian processes; provide alternatives to\ncurrent heat generation mechanisms; and efficiently deal with the different\ntimescales involved.
